The Darkness is a ghost town at PSN

by Mike on April 22nd, 2008

Do yourself a favor and stick to The Darkness’ single player.I’ve raved about The Darkness long enough. While the Starbreeze-developed FPS has an excellent story mode, its multiplayer leaves a lot to be desired. I can’t speak for Xbox Live since I don’t own a 360, but I can truly say that The Darkness is a ghost town at PSN.

Choose any multiplayer mode the game has to offer and it shows only one thing: there’s not a single frag-fest being played online. How then am I supposed to know first hand if The Darkness‘ multiplayer is any good? Sure, the lack of people playing it online may speak volumes, but not being able to experience playing the FPS with others is a letdown.

After doing a bit of digging, I discovered that The Darkness’ multiplayer has a good dose of lag and that some reviews advised to ignore multiplayer altogether until a patch to address the problem is released.

At first glance, the lineup of multiplayer modes doesn’t seem special anyway. You get your standard deathmatch, team deathmatch, VIP, and other usual game types that you can pretty much enjoy in other multiplayer-focused shooters.

Single player it is.

The Darkness has never offered a solid multiplayer experience. Lag and “lack of fun” have both been cited as reasons for the multiplayer never taking off.

Maybe the sequel will correct the multiplayer issues. And here’s hoping that the single player game does not suffer for it.

Why is the fun considered lacking? Is it because everything seemed standard?

I’m quite stoked about the sequel. Wait, is Starbreeze still the developer? Top Cow made no indication.

I sure hope it’s Starbreeze. They make fantastic FPSes. However, does this mean their team is divided into two since they’re working on Dark Athena?
